Contests

Veronica Sunbay, Napier
Veronica Sunbay on Marine Parade. Named after HMS Veronica which played
an important role in the rescue efforts following the 1931 earthquake.

List of Contests

The various contests are given in the detailed timetable, along with when and where they are held. (See this link.)

Contests groups are divided onto Solo, Ensemble (2 - 5), Band and Special. There are also subgroups based on age in some of these.

The Solo and Ensemble events take place on Wednesday and Thursday at the EIT campus in Taradale. Band events begin Friday evening and continue through much of Saturday. These are in Central Napier.

The Draw: (contestant order).

This is random as far as possible, and is available in the printed programme at the beginning of the contests. In the case of solo events, accompanists cannot be in two or more places at once. Consequently, the solo draw is random within the constraints of allowing them to have the accompanist of their choice. (If you see someone with a swag of sheetmusic moving rapidly between Halls, stand aside.) Judges are generally excluded from viewing contestants, and do not view the draw. We balance the needs of contestants whilst minimising advance publicity by supplying the draw printed not long before the Nationals start. It will not appear on any website until after each contest, when results are listed in draw order.

For some Special Contests, the draw occurs just before that Contest.

Rules of entry

The rules are governerned by the National body, and can be found on their website. On that site may be found the Contests page, where key information is issued by the Contest Manager. This is typically the set music, and where sheet music may be obtained from.

Results

These will be posted on this site within half a day of completion. Commentary and results for  major contests also can be expected to appear on 4BarsRest. After the contest is complete, results will be made available on the National BBANZ site. There on the Contests page may be found the results for 2008 (Christchurch) and 2007 (North Shore).
