Design
My web sites are characterised by:
- A simple navigational structure
- Simple maintenance
- Reflection of the character and locale of the client
- Rapid delivery
- Inexpensive
Simple Navigation
I like 5 to 8 key buttons, usually at the left. Visitors generally just want to find the page they really want, and not get lost. The small set of key menu buttons implicitly acts as a site map, and gives people an overview of the site.
There is no limit on the total number of pages. One site in the Portfolio has over 40. Menu pages are key pages. Others link from them. Some links are simply embedded in the text. The set of pages dealing with post-design activities 'Onto the web' comes with its own little menu.
Maintenance.
The sites are able to be updated quite readily, as they are not complex. They will have a single css sheet, and the partitioning of a page is also kept simple. There is no complex java code, no flash. You can arrange someone to maintain it, or ask me to do it.
Reflecting character and locale.
Each site is hand crafted, so it will be appropriate to the owner. See the Portfolio page for variety.
Rapid Delivery
Two weeks to the web is a reasonable target. Time is needed before design, sorting out photos, and deciding what the site should be limited to. It is a similar in concept to a brochure, and that means focusing on key ideas and images. My sites follow the standard structure of many sites on the web. This makes the actual design from an agreed general look (vague sketch) to initial site about 3 days work. Once a draft site is created (and can be emailed for viewing), you decide what detailed text to write. You can supply that as Word documents. The whole process is quite rapid.
Not expensive.
The object is to get a smallish site that could grow. The cost can be well under $1000. Over time it may expand, or you might be quite happy with a fairly static web presence, perhaps just changing the home page a few times a year.
