Have design - now what?

While your site is being designed, you should

  1. Register the web address you want.
  2. Select a host to allow people to browse to your site.

Once your site is active, you should

  1. Arrange for Google searching to be efficient.
  2. Arrange for someone to keep your site maintained.

I'll briefly cover each topic below. Detailed information on each topic is given on the pages to be found in the sub-menu lower left.

Web address - your Domain Name

This is a unique name such as www.antonz.co.nz
Register your choice of name on-line using say Domains4less for about $25
This is an important topic. Read the page on web addresses.

Internet Host

A host is a company with some large data cables leading into them, and some large disk drives that deliver files to anyone who wants them. That's how web browsing works. You need a host. However, you can change one whenever you wish, so this is only a moderately important topic. Skim through the page on hosts. Expect to pay $60 to $120 per year.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Getting people to find your site among millions is not easy, and can be expensive. The basic ideas are: (a) Google is your friend; help your friend. (b) Have a bunch of people who say you exist. Read the page on Search Engine Optimization . Tell me phrases your clients would use to search for you. Once onto the web, ask related organizations to link to you.

Getting a webmaster

Site changes are inevitable. What you need is a site that makes changes easy, and someone who charges reasonably to do so. Editing webs can be done from home, and quite a lot of people have the skills. I am happy to act as webmaster for my sites. Charges are $50 per hour. There is a page on what a webmaster does.

Other technical stuff

The page on Tech Stuff gives background technical information. There is an index of topics at the top so you can link to the question of interest.
